The technology associated with Virtual Realty (VR) and 3-D visualizations may not be what most educators would think of as a useful teaching tool in the classroom. Often, this is due to the specialized graphic design and programming skills needed to manipulate accompanying software, not to mention the expense associated with much of the equipment needed to view the simulations properly. However, newer, more portable VR products have become increasingly user-friendly and economic options, ensuring that their utility in classrooms is becoming more feasible. The case study I will use to discuss VR as a teaching tool was in my art history survey II class, where students had the chance to "visit" an important architectural structure they studied only briefly in class. The chance to, in effect, "walk through history" made this structure (and indeed other artworks they studied from this period) more meaningful to them and thereby enhanced their learning in ways that traditional classroom learning could not.
